Are you

jewish? WHat is jewish food?

-AdamusMinimus (from Youtube on 6-2007)

Jewish food is the same as all other food with the exception that dairy and meat food our separated and there are traditional recipes. We also do not eat shellfish or pork. That being said there is so many different recipes one can make to experience every type of cuisine out there today as Jewish people live all over the world and have incorporated the food from the areas that they live in.

END OF NEWEST MESSAGES

Oh Bubbe I love you, you're the BEST! So kind, reassuring and encouraging, too.

Been wanting to make delectable latkes for the longest time and now with your guidance and advice I'm doing so very soon. I would never leave out the yummy, complimentary apple sauce and sour cream either! Very long may you live. You're living proof we should ALL be Jewish w/an irreplaceable Bubbe!! xoxo

You have also encouraged me to continue to make more video recipes. Good luck on the latkes, I'm sure they will turn out well.

Dear Bubbe, First I would like to say how much I enjoy your show.

I have watched every episode and have printed out many of the recipes. The first one (which I'm very excited about) that I am going to cook is potato latkes.

My question is, when you go to make your 2nd batch of latkes, do you add more oil to the pan? It looked as if much of the oil was gone after the first batch.

Thank you, and I am so looking forward to your new episode.

Take care,
Teresa XXXXXXXXX

Teresa, yes you have to continue adding oil as this is what helps make the latkes crispy. However if you place them on a paper towel when you take them from the frying pan this will help take some of the oil from the latkes.

Also make sure the added oil becomes hot before placing your next batch into the frying pan.

Bought sponges are better, full of yummy things like 202, 222, 282, color 101, 108, 107 & flavor enhancers.

You would live to long eating yours!

i really enjoyed watching your shows, via You Tube and have just seen your website.

I have a real interest in cooking and baking foods that Mom made for us when we were little and am interested in the food her mother made for her when she was little. It's a great way to be close to your history and your ancestors. It is wonderful to see Bubbe cooking for us, even when our own are long gone.

Thanks for the recipes!

I was enjoying your fricassee recipe

up until you came to the mushrooms. I am allergic to them. What could you use instead of mushrooms?

-hedwig85 (from Youtube on 5-2007)

The recipe can be made as is without the mushrooms.

Hello, I so much enjoyed coming across the "Feed Me Bubbe" videos recently on the "Yideoz" website!

What fantastic recipes, I've already made 2 just today, and intend to do at least 2 or 3 more in the near future.

I made the sweet & sour meatballs, and put a few on a sandwich for myself. My teenage son (whom I thought might not like them) ate over half of them! I was successful to save a "few" more for another sandwich later, or they'd be gone, too. -ha- Needless to say, they were delicious. (My husband & younger son are just missing out!)

"Bubbe" in the videos seems really down-to-earth and so pleasant, with nice humor mixed in, a great combination. The yiddish words are also fun. Also, I like seeing the videos set in a real, homey kitchen. That just gives a great atmosphere that can't be achieved on a TV "set." Keep up the good work!

Thanks again ---

Dear Bubbe and Avrom, Thank you so very much for your wonderful instructions and recipes.

I am enjoying them so much. You are almost like having my own bubbe! My Norwegian grandma taught me to make lefse when I was a kid, but I have had to learn to make Jewish dishes all by myself.

I am so glad that you use the matzo ball mix in your chicken soup. I have used it for years, but always thought I was kind of "cheating".....now I know it is okay!

We are all anxiously awaiting the lesson on blintzes. And I would love to learn how to make chopped liver. Have you ever considered that as a topic?

Avrom, you are doing a wonderful thing for your family and for all of us. Preserving our heritage is an important and honorable thing. You are to be commended!

Love and Blessings,

Sandy XXXXXXXXXX, Granite Bay, California

We all think of time savers and maintaining traditional flavors, matzah ball mix happens to be one of those that taste well and are made successfuly.

Chopped liver will be coming eventually, we have so many requests, we are trying to fulfill the recipes that have the most requests at present.

Just want to tell you what a delight "Feed Me Bubbe" is.

Given that my nearly 7-year-old grandson is with me all day a couple of days per week, needless to say I hear the same expression many times and spend a large part of his stays preparing his favorites in my own kosher kitchen.

Avrom's Bubbe (what, no name credit?) shares traditional recipes in such entertaining fashion and uses the most up-to-date timesaving methods--something I really appreciate. You have a definite winner in this show. And may Bubbe live and be well to 120 (Avrom, too). Have a happy and delicious Shavuos.

Thank you for a lovely product and hatzlacha in becoming well-sponsored and widely recognized.

I relate to everyone as Bubbe, and they can add their own name to Bubbe.

The feelings and memories of each one relating to their Bubbe through me creates a stronger connection then if I were to give a name.

I read about your "youtube" show hosted by your grandson. The article, including your picture, was in the Walll Street Journal.

As a retired home economics teacher and a kosher cooking bubbe myself, I was anxious to see this novelty program. It was delightful and very "haimish", much better than seeing a Betty-Crocker type in a model kitchen. My only complaint is that the amount of each ingredient is sometimes not mentioned. For example, in the "jelly-jammies" you said "eggs and sugar and dry ingredients without telling the quantity. I am pretty good at improvising, but it would be more helpful to have the amounts. Maybe it could be written on a card that is shown on the screen at the end {or the start)of each show. By the way, the lukshen kugel works very well if you use 2 cups of cooked rice (brown or white, instant or regular). But then it wouldn't match with the yiddish word of the day!

One other suggestion: If there was a list of all the recipes we could pick the ones we want to see. I'm not very experienced with the computer so I have to watch whatever comes up and it gets frustrating to see repeats when there are supposed to be 20 to choose from. Maybe Avrom can give me a simple computer lesson? Thank you for one of the most charming and upbeat and useful offerings. May you be blessedwith good health and the opportunity to continue this Jewish treasure. May you have lots of "nachas" from your family and your viewers. "Nachas" is a great Yiddish word!

The recipes are all available online. The website is under development and I will do my best to make it even easier then it is currently to find the recipes.

For now here is a direct link to the recipe section.

http://www.chalutzproductions.com/FeedMeBubbe/Recipes/RecipeList.html

As for putting the amounts on the video, it is much easier to list it then to give individual amounts on the video as the video is more to show how to do the steps for those that can't understand how to use the recipe, like me.

Thank you for watching the show, and look for changes in the future,

By coincidence we were just talking about P'tcha the other day.

I agree with you. Today it would be considered an hors d'oeuvre.

It is available but you have to make it yourself and I found that calves feet can only be found in the frozen section of your butcher or meat market.

It's delicious, and those who have not tasted it, will have to develop a taste for it.

Not only is it good but it is healthy too.

Dear Bubbe, You are the best discovery on the Internet.

Thanks to the Wall Street Journal’s article about you, I will now be able to actually cook the delicious food my bubbie used to make, and I am sure you will now be inundated with viewers.

My mother used to make P’tcha or calves feet. I have been looking for it in all the Kosher take-out stores, but it is difficult to find. I know P'tcha may not be a crowd pleaser, but would you consider making it?

Thank you and G-d bless you,

Raizel

I never knew either of my grandmothers,

so it's been wonderful watching and listening to your show.

Thank you.

This is just what I am trying to do, to allow everyone to have the feelings of relating to grandparents.

I too, never knew either of my grandparents as they were in Europe and my parents came to America.

Growing up I envied my friends, especially around the holidays when they had their family get together with their grandparents.

I am hoping that I can fulfill the gap that I had and that others may have as well.

Hi Bubbe, I just saw your website and thought it was great.

I was wondering if you could help me out. My mom recently passed away and she used to make a "mock stuffed cabbage" It tasted like the real thing, but it was meatballs and the sauce had cabbage and raisins in it. I found her recipe but it was just a list of ingredients. Would you have this recipe by any chance?
Thanks for your help,
Michelle XXXXXXXXXXXX

What your mother probably did was make the meatballs and instead of rolling them in cabbage,

She cut the cabbage and put everything in the sauce.

Similar to meatballs and spaghetti mixed in a sauce together.

Hi Bubbe and Avrom! I stumbled across your podcast totally by accident and boy am I glad I did!

I think you guys are awesome. I just watched the first 3 episodes today and they were great. I can't wait to make your sweet and sour meatballs, they looked so delicious.

Bubbe, can I adopt you please? I never knew my grandmother, she died when I was very young, and my mother passed away 6 years ago. My parents were divorced and I was raised by my father and I rarely saw my mother while she was alive. When I watch your show I feel like I am right in your kitchen and that you are the grandma I never had. I think you're terrific. Avrom you are so lucky to have her. :)

Besides enjoying watching the cooking and getting the recipes, (which is what I need because I never learned to cook while I was growing up and I'm trying to make up for it now as a mom), I just love listening to Bubbe and what you have to say about everything. It feels like you're talking to me and we are having a conversation together, even if it is a one-sided one. ;) Also, I love your kitchen. It's so "normal" looking, like what I'd expect my mom's or grandma's would look like. It's not all fancy schmancy like all the cooking shows today have. Please, please, whatever you do to improve your show, do not change the kitchen. Please do not give Bubbe's kitchen a brand spanking, hi-tech, up-to-date, state of the art, remodel. It wouldn't feel as cozy and real as it does now if you change it. That's almost half the charm and appeal of the show for me.

Avrom you should be commended for starting a project with your grandmother. Connection between the generations is something that seems to be almost completely lost these days. And we are all benefiting from your effort.

Thank you so much for this wonderful show. It's much more than a cooking show. Even though we've never met just watching Bubbe cook and share her experiences and watching the two of you interact makes me feel so good. :)

Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,
Alie XXXXXXXX
Chicago, IL

Thank you for your wonderful letter. You have really summed up what we are all about.

And don't worry Avrom is going to improve productions but the kitchen will never ever be a part of the changes.

Hi -I was flipping through the channels and came across the segment about Bubbe and her grandson, Avrom.

A few years ago, my Grandpa passed away and my Grandma passed away a few months ago.  When Bubbe said she'd like to be everyone's "Bubbe," my heart just melted.  I had a wonderful relationship with my Grandma, I miss her terribly, and Avrom's involvement with his grandmother reminded me of the special bond that I shared with my Grandma.

I just want to say -- Bubbe, you are the cutest!  God Bless.

Dear Bubbe, I just found your show today, and I absolutely love it.

I've just finished watching all the episodes, and I have a question for you. I'm planning on trying several recipies (maybe "adapting" would be a better word), but I've noticed that you haven't once used butter in any of your dishes. This might be a problem, because butter is usually all i have around the house. do you have any advice on where I could substitute butter in your recipies safely, and where it would be a bad idea?

Thanks for your time! I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Sincerely,
XXXX

-Meredith (from braindouche.net on 1-2007)

Dear Meredith, Wherever there is margarine you can substitute for butter. However if it is within a meat meal or if you want the meal to be Pareve you must use Pareve margarine. Of which there are several brands.

Make sure it states OU Pareve on the label.

I've been thinking a lot about my Bubby since I've been watching your videos.

This type of cooking that our grandmothers did/do will soon be a lost art unless the skills and knowledge are passed on. You and your Bubbe are making this happen! My dearest Bubby passed away about 17 years ago at the age of 96. We were lucky enough to live near to her and share in many many delicious meals! I hope that you and your family have many many more years together with your Bubbe. She is a true delight to watch and I have told my sister about her and you and she has gone to your site and watched Bubbe cook, too.

Bubbe is remarkably poised and comfortable in front of the camera and seems like she's been doing it all her life. The Food Network these days is too "perfect" and I think that it's the imperfections, the realism, the feeling that you are in Bubbe's kitchen and not in a studio that give your videos part of their charm. She's not rehearsing lines, it's just coming out naturally. I think your show will be very popular and when more people see it, they will be  hooked as I am. I wouldn't be surprised to see her on the "View" or Jay Leno.  Again, thanks for sharing your Bubbe with all of us, and please give her my best wishes.

I do have a request for a recipe....how about a baked chicken dish, or a pie??
Take care!

Debbie from Portland, OR.

Have you ever made fresh blintzes from scratch?

And, can they be be made the night before and baked off the next day or will they dry out? I made your sweet and sour meatballs and everybody LOVED them!! thank you so much for sharing your kitchen with us-it is a real comfort to watch you cook.

Mitchell B.

Dear Mitchell,

The answer is yes. The blintz leaf itself must be placed between layers of wax paper or plastic wrap individually so that they won't stick or dry out and completely covered with the wrap. The best way to do it is to fill the leaf, roll it up, and place on a plate covered with plastic wrap. Have this kept in the refrigerator until it is ready to be used. This can be made the night before and they won't dry out.

As for the sweet and sour meatballs thank you for letting us know that you enjoyed them..

Thanks for the Chicken Soup recipe.

I now know that I should to let the kneidlach rest before making them into balls.

It's shame there I can't buy any chicken shmaltz - what would be a good substitute?

-Luxembourgish (from Youtube on 11-2006)

In certain recipes like chopped liver or similar recipes sautéed chopped onion in vegetable oil will give you a good substitute for schmaltz.

This will avoid cholesterol.
